In music and in art, I remain fascinated by various playful and poignant vehicles for storytelling, and by the connections between people, delighting in the unique moments that spring up in the in-between spaces of shared creation.
I love to combine artistic works and illustration with my musical experiments, most literally through the form of crankies, but also through sketching, prints, paints, and papercut sculpture.
I also enjoy teaching, helping others find their crankie groove, and corny jokes.
Here are a few examples of what “cranks” my tractor! :)

wildflower-a-day sketch project
One April I endeavoured to sketch a wildflower (almost) daily. I shared them on my personal Instagram along with photos of the flowers.
Othello, a Moor of Venice, or O Spartan Dogs, Keep the House!
a few stills from my longest-to-date (nearly 150’) crankie, made to serve as a narrative device for an operatic retelling of Shakespeare’s Othello, set in New Orleans, by Stephanie Nilles.

hiraeth, a crankie
a short scroll in paint and papercut, dealing with a meditation on home. original music by me.
"Hiraeth" is a Welsh word that doesn't have a direct English translation but means something like a mix of yearning and home and beauty and loss and love and landscape. Last year a pipe burst in our house, luckily in a location most convenient if one *must* flood. Little was damaged, some of my old books taking the worst of the drenching. After the cleanup I went on a library bender, rereading many of the old books that I lost, including a slew of L. M. Montgomery novels I hadn't opened in years. Though it's not my favorite of her works, in "Mistress Pat" I came across a description of a cozy winter evening spent in conversation with friends, with this unattributed "motto" carved into the fireplace mantel like a household axiom. It struck me as a wonderful description of what makes home home, whenever and wherever you find such affinity.
this piece is dedicated to my uncle waylon, whose internal compass always pointed home.
Easter Dresses
A single-day project in watercolor, ink, and paper sculpture, delving into my mother’s creative expression through sewing, and the fibers that weave together memories. “Early Spring” melody and banjo by Neal Hendrix, harmonies and fiddle by me.
The Great Steamboat Race
Watercolor, ink, and paper sculpture. Music is a traditional Kentucky fiddle tune, Shippingport, played by me with Bobby Winstead on guitar.
My first foray into the crankie world, inspired by and made for my friend Laurel.
